If you drive a Dodge, Ford, or Chevy diesel, your engine takes a lot of juice to turn over. If you forget to turn a light off or leave the key on too long, you might find yourself with a truck that doesn’t have enough battery power to start. Here’s what to do next, from Midway Diesel LLC in Eloy, AZ.
Find someone willing to help you jump your truck. People are typically more than willing to help. If you don’t have jumper cables, you’ll have to find someone who does...it’s best to always carry a set with you.
Be cautious of moving parts, or parts that will be moving once the engine is started. Next:
- Attach the red lead on one end of the cable to the positive post on the battery, or the terminal marked in red under the hood (on vehicles where the battery isn’t easily accessible.)
- Make sure the leads on the other end of the cable aren’t touching.
- Attach the black lead to a solid ground, or the negative battery terminal if there’s no bare metal ground points within reach. Consult your manual for good ground point locations.
- Being careful not to touch the leads together on the other side, follow the same procedure on the other vehicle. If it isn’t running already, start it up.
- Wait a couple of minutes, then give yours a try - it should start right up. If not, re-check the connections and give it a few more minutes.
Just remember...red to red (positive to positive) and black to black (negative to negative) and you’ll be back on the road in no time.
